about

The song has a musical arrangement inspired by the melodies of traditional għana guitar playing and chant. Based on a yé-yé beat, this upbeat and danceable song is based on a selection of traditional texts taken from high pitched singing known as il-Bormliża. These same lyrics, which were documented by ethnomusicologists in the late 1960s, were likely to have been passed on through generations as with most oral folk poetry.

With constant reference to the voice of old and the sweet sound of guitars, the song is a nostalgic reference to Maltese folk music and poetry.

lyrics

BORMLIŻA YÉ-YÉ (Lyrics: Trad. Bormliża)

U fejnu leħni
Leħni ta' dari
Kemm kelli leħni
Leħni sabiħ.

U fejnu leħni
Leħni ta' dari
Għaliex naħseb
Ħaduli r-riħ.

Xi ħlewwa ta' kitarrini
Isejħu lil min ikun ġej
Kemm jagħmlu sabiħ mal-lejl
U jwaqqfu lil min ikun għaddej.

U fejnu leħni
Leħni ta' dari
Kemm kelli leħni
Leħni sabiħ.

U fejnu leħni
Leħni ta' dari
Għaliex naħseb
Ħaduli r-riħ.

**

Oh where is my voice,
My voice of the past?
I think the wind
has blown it away.

Oh where is my voice,
My voice of the past?
How sweet was my voice
that beautiful voice

Oh where is my voice
My voice of the past
I think the wind
has blown it away

The sweetness of guitars,
Hailing those who pass,
Oh how sweet they sound at night,
They stop all passers by.

Oh where is my voice,
My voice of the past?
How sweet was my voice
that beautiful voice

Oh where is my voice,
My voice of the past,
I think the wind,
has blown it away.
